Dog Grooming at the Dog House
Hello!!!
My name is Rebecca and I am the new excited groomer that has joined the wonderful staff at The Dog House. I have been grooming pets for over a decade now, but 6 years ago took an apprenticeship with an amazing master groomer which I then became certified with all breed standards, but not only do I do dogs but I also love grooming cats too!
I am always aiming to please my clients but with lots of consideration to their pets too, meaning sometimes a miracle puts their pet through terrible discomfort and I myself am not comfortable with that, but, can assure you with a quick assessment at time of arrival there will never be surprises. This all can be be eliminated with your upkeep at home with their coat. I enjoy performing all types of cuts and when someone has no idea what they want, I always respond and deliver with a "cute as possible!". I am also thrilled to inform you that here at The Dog House we use Earth Bath products which not only leave your pets coat beautiful and smelling delicious but also completely safe for our ever changing environment.
I have just recently moved to Toronto from the suburbs and have a lot of ideas and goals with the dogs of Toronto and where I want to take my career. I wish to start entering grooming competitions in 2010 with not only breed standard cuts but also creative design meaning that I will be making dogs stand out wherever they are by using safe made specifically for animals colour. So, if you are open minded, love standing out and being the talk of the town I am the groomer for you. After working with other groomers with the creative side I would like to work on my own portfolio and will be offering qualified interested clients with free colouring when a full groom is booked which will be outside of my regular business hours so full concentration and talent can be given.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and I look forward to meeting you and your family!

Dog Grooming Tips: Home Maintenance
We all love our dogs and we love them when they look spectacular and feeling healthy. Bringing your beloved dog in for professional dog grooming services guarantees a second full check up (other than your vet) on your dog’s skin condition, hair, eyes, teeth and ear.
My recommendation for maintaining your dogs grooming upkeep is very simple. All dogs should be bathed and completely brushed out monthly, some every 2 weeks depending on the coat length and activity level. Dogs with longer hair require more upkeep than dogs with short hair.
People always ask me when is a good time to bring in their pet for grooming and my answer varies with every owner. Depending on what kind of haircut you like your pet to have and how long you can stand that funky dog odor smell. My suggestion is (and I do this with my own pets) every month a full haircut to maintain the look I want, and then every second week a bath which includes a trim around the face, nails, ears, pads, sanitation and ear cleaning.
Bringing your dog in for grooming every month is ideal, but can be costly. So here are some tips for maintaining your dog at home so when his/her next appointment comes up the groomer will not have to shave your dog due to lack of proper coat care. This usually upsets the owner but they have to understand that brushing and pulling on a damaged matted coat is not fun and causes pain to the animal. Think of it as if your hairdresser was pulling on your tangled hair for hours. Your head will get soar and it will be one the most uncomfortable things you probably will go through.
Step 1: Brush and Comb
Brush your dog every 3-4 days. You brush your hair everyday so doing this for your dog will make a big difference and cause less mats to form. Owners always tell me that they do brush their dogs yet they still end up being matted all over. This is because lack of care when brushing. Break up sections of your dogs coat and thoroughly brush it until you can run a comb through. This means that there are no tangles. Move on to the next section and continue with this care.
Step 2: Bath
You bathe everyday (hopefully). So if Rover has been outside sun, rain and snow. He needs a good bath. He/she doesn’t need it everyday like you, but when your dog is dirty it is a good idea. Bathing your dog on a daily basis can dry out the skin, but bathe when dirty, or if you don’t want to use shampoo, give your dog a good thorough rinse. Only bathe your dog after you have brushed him/her out completely because bathing a dog with matted hair will tighten the mats when they dry which is pretty painful already so don’t contribute to it getting worse.
That’s it! Yup. It was THAT easy. So if you do this with your pet you can prolong the period in which you would need to bring him/her in for professional dog grooming. Also when you do the groomer will not have to make any dramatic changes to the clip of your dog because you have maintained it well enough we can do our job perfectly.
Here are some sample schedules that clients can choose from when deciding when to bring their dogs in.
Plan 1: Haircut every month
-Every month a complete dog groom (haircut, nails, ears, pads, bath the whole works!)
-2nd week Bath and tidy up (trimming of face, feet, nails, ears, pads, sanitation of bum and groin)
Plan 2: Haircut every 2 months
-Every month a complete dog groom (haircut, nails, ears, pads, bath the whole works!)
-Second month is Bath and tidy up (trimming of face, feet, nails, ears, pads, sanitation of bum and groan)
-Third Month is complete dog groom
Ideally speaking bringing your dog in every 6-8 weeks for a full haircut is good just as long as you maintain your pup he/she would be leaving the grooming room looking fabulous every time.
Hope this is helpful and see you soon!!
